Trail description

Cyclists riding the Lonesome Pine mountain bike trail in Kielder Forest The combination of both Lonesome Pine and Bloody Bush MTB trails gives an impressive 33km of red grade riding that provides riders with singletrack to the border to tie in with existing routes in Scotland. The Bloody Bush MTB Trail starts off the Lonesome Pine Trail and links Kielder Water and Forest Park to the Scottish border and the established 7 stanes bike centre at Newcastleton. A return route via the existing Cross Border Trail makes for a ride of over 60km. It offers a breath-taking adventure ride through some of the UK's wildest terrain (so be prepared!) Please note, to access the singletrack sections, the first three miles of the trail from Kielder Castle to Lewisburn inlet is on the Lakeside Way Multi-user trail (south shore).

The trail takes its name from a location on the border marked by a stone pillar which commemorates a pitched battle between English cattle raiders and their Scottish pursuers in medieval times. Aimed at intermediate off-roaders, it speeds through trees and over moorland in what is, quite literally, the middle of nowhere.....And that brings us on to the most important point about the trail - this is a serious trail in serious terrain. You are riding in one of the most remote places in England where the weather can turn rapidly from sunshine to blizzard. An accident here or a simple wrong-turning could have serious consequences. Treat the place with respect and prepare adequately - check your bike, carry spares, lunch and some more, plenty of water, a map (download one here), whistle, torch, change of clothing and let someone know where you are going and when you are due back. Above all, have a blast!
