(Average user rating: 4 unrated 3.9/5)

The old Forest of Savernake is derived from ancient wood pasture management, and has many veteran trees.  The forest extends to 1100 hectares (2750 acres) most of which is classified as a Special Site of Scientific Interest (SSSI) as well as being registered as an important historic park.

One of the oldest trees is the Big Bellied Oak which is very noticeable on the side of the A346 road, south of Cadley.  There are many other old and named trees in Savernake, a guide is available to purchase from the Postern Hill Campsite.

Since 1939 the majority of the woodland has been managed by the Forestry Commission with the freehold retained by the Savernake Estate.

What do other visitors say?

Is it Ok to cycle through the forest - it looks like it is designated as a traffic free cycle route. i'm guessing the track is pretty uneven and best suited for MTBs and the slick tyres of road bikes?

Andrew Brown, 11/May/2018

Cycling is allowed in Savernake on the designated tracks/roads. The grand avenue that runs through the centre is a stoned driveway. Just be aware and conscious of other forest users, Thank You.

Spring has finally arrived after the last bout of bad weather we've experienced and everything is slowly starting to come out. For plants like bluebells, there are already signs of them, but we are anticipating them to come out late April/May. Thank you.

Forestry Commission Response

I have visited the forest many times, it is WONDERFUL!!! Is there a list of Map References available for the Named Trees? If not please produce one!

Colin Alborough, 13/Feb/2018

Due to the site being free to use we do not have the means to produce maps. However, there is a map located on a sign in the car park at Postern Hill locating some of the named ancient trees. Also, if you go onto the Savernake Woodlands Forestry Commission Page it gives you links to the map of Savernake and an information leaflet. Hope you find these helpful and continue to enjoy visits to the forest.
